What’s Happening in the Garden

It’s always fun to return after a good amount of time away from the garden to see the changes.

Here’s what we came home to this week after our twelve day road trip.

Our pot of potatoes took off!

The bee balm had bloomed

along with the lavender

.

The cucumbers had come along nicely.

Maybe this will be a good year for cucumbers since I only planted a few?

The carrots needed  weeding and thinning asap.

There were plenty of peas for the 4th..

Did you know that in the state of Maine salmon and peas is the traditional Fourth of July dinner?

It was time to pinch back the basil!

And the zucchini had done it’s thing

along with the Roma tomatoes!

It really felt like magic to come back to this.

What are you growing?

How are things in your garden?

Leave a comment! I’d love to hear from you!

A Few Things Happened…

First, I forgot my camera. I hate that.  I spent the evening reaching for my camera, which I didn’t have with me.

Second, It was a lovely evening. We met our good friends at the Custom House, enjoyed wonderful music, kids activities and saw lots and lots of friends and neighbors. Michael was working but it’s one of his favorite events, so that was okay.

Third, my middle daughter and her friends actually met one of their favorite characters from the Hunger Games movie (who’s name I can’t remember, sorry!). The new Grown Ups  movie is being filmed in the area, so there have been many celebrity sightings in town over the past month or so.  Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and lots of younger actors who they know from tv… my kids have been enjoying this.

Fourth, about an hour before the fireworks were to start a dark cloud started to form just behind the wharf area. I took my youngest kids to play on the beach for a little while and watched it hoping that the cloud would move south or west or north.. It just sat there and slowly darkened.  What ensued is best described in this Salem News Article:

We did have the advantage of being able to duck into my husbands workplace to watch through a window during the lightening. It was nice to look around and see all five of my kids and several of their friends safely there.

As I said a few weeks ago, there’s nothing like the fourth of July in Salem!

Tomorrow, a garden update!  Time to get out there and weed. It’s amazing how much things change in our  garden in two weeks.

Thanks for stopping in!

Enjoy everything~

The Fourth of July at Salem Willows

We are back from our road trip just in time for the 4th of July in Salem! We got up early this morning and headed down to the Willows neighborhood for their annual Horribles parade and party. There’s no place else like the Willows on the fourth of July. The whole neighborhood has a party and many of us who live in other parts of the city go down to enjoy it too.

Here’s our friend, Jane Dionne!

Of course there was music..

and some social/political commentary.

The Secret Service were there

like you’ve never seen them before

The “mayor” marched too, as she does every year…

The game theme was fun and creative.

There were red drinking cups… I think I kind of  missed the message here, leave a comment if you can help me with that. They were having a great time!

The decorations are amazing!

beautiful

patriotic

and fun!

It’s a party like no other!

Happy Fourth! Tomorrow there may be fireworks, let’s hope that my camera works..

I’m so happy to be home and blogging again!!

Sepia, and the Mystery Lady’s Photo

Changing photos to sepia is fun (and easy with I-Photo)

Here’s a photo I took at the Common last week:

Same photo, changed to Sepia.  Isn’t this timeless? It looks like it could have been taken a hundred years ago.

Here’s another one, the cars kind of give it away. I should crop them out.

This was our Christmas Picture a few years ago. My kids have grown up so much since then. I wish we could slow that down a little bit.

and this one really is old… Isn’t she beautiful? I have her hanging over my fireplace.  It’s a photo that we found in my Dad’s things. My sister and I think it could be our grandmother. Unfortunately we don’t have any known photos of her. If anyone  recognizes this lady please let me know! I call her Rose.

We’ve been wondering for a few years now…

Anyway, Happy Monday! I’m off to prepare for our big family road trip later this week.

Enjoy Everything!

Salem 101: Bewitched!

This statue has become a landmark in Salem. Can you tell who it is?

Here’s a closeup of her face

Of course, it’s the late Elizabeth Montgomery portraying Samantha Stevens on the Bewitched TV show!

What child of the sixties doesn’t remember watching Samantha and all of her adventures? In June of 2005 this statue was installed and dedicated here in Salem. It was donated to the city by the TV Land Network. There was quite a bit of controversy in the days leading up to the unveiling. Only two Bewitched episodes were said to be filmed here, so it’s relevance to our city’s history was widely questioned.  Some felt that it took away from the seriousness and tragedy of the  witch trials.

There was lots of excitement on the day of the reveal.  I didn’t attend, possibly because my fifth child was three months old  and the thought of taking five children under the age of eleven downtown to see a statue unveiled compromised my ability to breathe properly.  I believe that members of the cast were here, including the actress who played Tabitha. It was a big event!

It seems that Samantha has settled in comfortably. She’s become a landmark  in the center of a long row of wonderful restaurants. Salem’s downtown is hopping these days, and while Samantha doesn’t exactly represent the serious side of Salem,  she definitely adds a whimsical element to a city that is well-known for fun and whimsy.

What a Rainy Monday!

We are in the middle of a Nor’easter here this morning. For those who don’t live in New England, A Nor’easter is a storm that comes in off of the ocean from the northeast. Nor’easters often bring damage to homes, roads and of course, gardens. Salem is under a flood warning today as the tide is expected to be unusually high. Many of our roads here flood when this happens because water going out to the ocean through the storm drains backs up and has no place to go. There can also be damage to homes on the water when the ocean gets higher and closer than we’d like it to. Let’s hope and pray that everyone is okay and the beautiful homes on the coast and in town don’t sustain too much damage.

I’m a little bit of a  planner so here’s an overview of what  may happen this week at the The Salem Garden if all goes well. Of course we  know that in a household with this many people anything could happen but we’ll hope for the best!

Some of my  kids and I will be planting something together… look familiar? I’m excited about this project!

I hope to show you something else about Salem. It won’t be the Friendship because the ship is away for repairs.  She should be back very soon and we’ll be visiting then.

Things are growing in the garden! We’ll be sure to take a look.

I think we’ll be visiting our chickens too. Here’s one of our babies about eight weeks ago. Just like my human babies, they grow so quickly!

Sounds busy!  Let’s get going!  A little rain is nothing!
